Ever since Outer Banks dropped their first season on Netflix all the way back in 2020, we’ve been hardcore fans of the series, and could honestly watch 100 more series of the Pogues, but is the show going to return for a season five? Season four featuring a time jump of 18 months, joining the group searching for Blackbeard’s treasure after getting into money troubles of their own.
In November 2024, Netflix revealed the Pogues and the Kooks’ story is officially coming to an end, with the streaming service announcing a fifth and final season of the show. With so many unanswered questions (What will happen with the Blue Crown? Will John B. finally get the treasure he’s been seeking? What happened with Blackbeard?), here’s everything you need to know about Outer Banks season 5, from cast news to release date and more.
When was Outer Banks season 5 confirmed?
In November 2024, ahead of Outer Banks season 4 part 2 dropping on Netflix, the show’s creators Shannon Burke, Josh Pate and Jonas Pate shared some good and bad news. Yes, there will be more Outer Banks, but sadly it will be the last season. Sharing a ‘Dispatch to all Pogues’, they wrote:
“Seven years ago, in the summer of 2017, we came across a photo of teenagers on a beach at dusk during a power outage. That photo sparked an idea for a story of four best friends who only want to have a good time all the time. From this beginnig, we imagined a myster ythat would lead to a five-season journey of adventure, treasure htuning and friendship.
At the time, seven years ago, it seemed impossible that we would really get to tell the whole five-season story, but here we are, at the end of our fourth season, still chopping away.
The fourth season was our longest and hardest – but most rewarding – to produce. The season ends with a feature length episode, which we think is our best, most powerful episode. We hope you feel the same way.
Now, with a little sadness, but also excitement, we’re putting season four behind us, and are turning to season five, in which we hope to bring our beloved Pogues home in the way we imagined and planned years ago. Season five will be our last season, and we think it will be our best yet. We hope you’ll join us for one more paddle out to the surf break.”
What have the cast said about Outer Banks season 5?
During the press tour for the fourth season of Outer Banks, some of the cast touched on thoughts and plans for future seasons. Chase Stokes and Rudy Rankow were asked if this series was the last by Entertainment Tonight, to which Chase replied: “I think our biggest thing has always been wanting to end the show on a high note. And it’s not about how the plane takes off, it’s how you land it. I just want to make sure we do it justice and I want to make sure that when we do end, whenever that time comes that we end the show the right way.”
And Rudy Pankow added, “I think there’s still messages to be told but at the same time, it comes down to the writers if they have a good base on how to tell those messages and I think they still do.”

Well this all depends on how the second part of season four wraps up, but we’d expect to see this main group return:

What could happen in Outer Banks season 5?
Again this all depends on how the final part of season four plays out. The first half of the season arrived in October 2024, ended on the cliff hanger reveal that JJ is in fact the son of Larissa Genrette and Chandler Groff, which means he’s technically a Kook.
This news is going to have serious repercussions throughout the next half of the season and depending on how JJ and the others handle this news could then dictate what happens next.
Oh and there’s also the small matter of Pope and Sarah escaping the crypt to contend with. Depending on what happens in the next episodes, which land in November 2024, we’ll have a better idea of season five’s plans.
Outer Banks season 5 release date speculation
As of November 2024, Netflix revealed the team were working on writing the scripts for season five, but creator Josh Pate previously revealed, “We’ve always known from the beginning what the last scene would be.”
So far, the release schedule has been:
Season one – April 2020
Season two – July 2021
Season three – February 2023
Season four – October / November 2024
Based on the previous release schedule, and also the way in which the cast’s schedules are likely to be busier now, we would expect an early 2026 release date for Outer Banks season 5.
