Xavier Smalls’ Angel forms the most important part of Kimmie’s back story and pushes her further into the underbelly of the Bellaire family’s operations. When he comes of age, Angel shows Kimmie and her friend Rain Jules who owns a strip club as well as a s*x trafficking business.
He continues unwittingly to involve them in this dangerous life, remaining loyal to his friends, unaware that his very first introduction would change their lives.

Angel still battles with the problems of his own life in the present day. He has an unstable relationship with the mother of his child, and he is also suspected of infidelity. He is kicked out of his home and spends most of his time with Kimmie, dancing for male clients to keep himself afloat.
Angel’s storyline is a microcosm of the themes that can be found in the entirety of Beauty in Black: survival through times of personal and monetary strains while remaining true to friends.
It is well into Part 1 before one will know if Angel can ever break himself free from his burdened past or if he can ever unshackle himself from Kimmie to escape becoming further inducted into her survival struggles.
