Lemons, if you grow them like this they will last you all year round: the very simple method

Growing lemons year-round using a unique method can be a fulfilling and sustainable way to have a constant supply of fresh lemons. This guide will walk you through the step-by-step process of cultivating lemon trees in a way that maximizes yield and ensures their longevity. Let’s get started!

Step-by-Step Guide to Growing Lemons Year-Round

Step 1: Prepare the Lemon Tree

    1. Making Incisions: Start by making small parallel incisions on the trunk of your lemon tree. Ensure these incisions only cover the front part of the trunk, leaving the back intact. This method encourages the tree to produce roots from the exposed area.
    2. Creating the Plant Mixture: Prepare a mixture made of specific plant materials. This should be dense enough to hold together when wrapped. This mixture will be crucial for stimulating root growth.
    3. Wrapping the Trunk:
      • Wrap the prepared mixture around the incised area of the trunk, ensuring it covers the cuts without touching the back.
      • Secure the mixture with a plastic bag or wrap, making sure it is tightly sealed at both the top and bottom to contain the mixture.
    4. Securing the Wrap: Use a strong string to secure the entire wrapped section around the trunk. This helps keep the mixture in place as it promotes root growth.

Step 2: Wait for Root Development

    1. Waiting Period: Leave the wrapped trunk for about two months. During this time, the mixture should stimulate root formation around the trunk.
    2. Cutting the Trunk: After the waiting period, carefully cut the trunk below the wrapped section. You should observe that roots have formed within the plant mixture.

Step 3: Transplanting the Lemon Tree

    1. Prepare a Pot: Choose a large plant pot and fill the base with a layer of coconut coir or other organic matter. This helps with drainage and moisture retention.
    2. Adding Soil: Cover this layer with soil, then insert the cut trunk section (with the roots) into the pot.
    3. Covering the Roots: Gently cover the roots with soil, ensuring they are well-protected.
    4. Using Rice Bran: Spread a generous amount of rice bran over the soil. This acts as a protective layer and provides nutrients to the plant.
    5. Final Soil Layer: Add more soil over the rice bran until you reach the top edge of the pot.
    6. Watering: Water the soil thoroughly but ensure it is not waterlogged.

Step 4: Encouraging Growth and Flowering

    1. Trimming: Trim any excess leaves and branches to promote root establishment and healthy growth.
    2. Onion Pieces: After about 2.5 months, introduce pieces of onion to the soil. This helps promote flowering in lemon trees.
    3. Watering Again: Cover the onions with soil and water generously to encourage growth.
    4. Wait for Flowering: In approximately three and a half months, your lemon tree should begin to flower. After about five months, you can expect to see green lemons developing.

    Step 5: Harvesting Lemons

    1. Harvesting: When the lemons turn a vibrant yellow, they are ready for harvest. Use scissors to cut the lemons from the tree, avoiding any damage to the branches.

    Benefits of Growing Lemons

    • Culinary Uses: Fresh lemons can be used in a variety of dishes and beverages, enhancing flavors and providing a refreshing taste.
    • Health Benefits: Lemons are rich in vitamin C and have various health benefits, including aiding digestion and promoting hydration.
    • Natural Cleaning: Lemon juice has natural antibacterial properties, making it an effective cleaning agent.

    Conclusion

This method of growing lemons is not only rewarding but also practical for maintaining a steady supply of fresh lemons throughout the year. By following these steps and providing the right care, you can enjoy the fruits of your labor while enhancing your culinary creations and benefiting from the health properties of lemons. Happy gardening!
